On Soulstep's STEP008, Houston, Texas producer Gerado Davalos gets creative with his ethereal and haunting single Innocence. Recording under the moniker Yingyang Audio, Davalos shows experience, foresight, and thoughtfulness beyond what one would assume one with such a limited production resume (this is his first official release).
On A-side Innocence, Davalos blends the lightest of synth elements play with subtle trancey overtones against a backdrop of polyrhythmic drum rolls to create a sound not unlike digital water droplets falling onto purple waters. A beating heart of warm, throbbing low-end adds depth to this somber and celestial slice of ambient bass.
B-side Calypso takes things to a darker place—dusk in the forest. Running waters and creeping bass create a sense of foreboding as the freaks and beasts come out at night. On Calypso, Davalos masters a sense of depth and space, letting each note—each drum beat—breathe and have its own life, creating a lush soundscape against a bleak palette.
